Catching up on “cruise news.”

Carnival’s Conquest—a 3000-passenger ship—returned to service this week out of its home port of Galveston, following extensive renovations. The renovations to the seven-year-old ship were mainly for the kids. They’ve added a Circle “C” club to ships aimed at the 12-14 year olds and, a favourite of all onboard, a massive LED screen on the Lido Deck. Eighteen ocean view staterooms were given the full balcony treatment. The Camp Carnival and Club O2 facilities for children and teens, respectively, were also updated.

Oceania Cruises’ new build the Marina will have twice as many dining venues as their current ships. Look for a French country restaurant and a Pan-Asian restaurant – with the later becoming a staple of many cruise lines. In total, there will be four more restaurants on Marina now scheduled to launch in 2010 and will take over the current Western Mediterranean – now being sailed in the spring and fall by Regatta. Oceania has one more ship scheduled for completion in 2011.

The trend to shorter cruises is expanding to Europe.

Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas will sail more than 30 short cruises out of Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Harwich this summer compared to only 10 last year.

Holland America will be offering short cruises on the Eurodam out of Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Dover.

Lots more tomorrow.
